                               Sam Whiteman

Sam won his First Grade Cap at 15 in the 2007/08 season when then Mariner coach Brett Whittaker could no longer resist the temptation to play the talented youngster in the highest grade. He quickly settled into the first-grade set up and has not been out of the side since, playing as our number 1 keeper and batsman in all forms of the game.

Originally a Bunbury junior, Sam made the trip to training each night alongside Brett and great mate Jacob Whittaker, who was also capped at the same age before leaving us for Claremont.  Sam represented WA at Under 17 level along with Whittaker and fellow Marnier Ryan Done before being selected to represent Australia in a World Cup winning Under 19 squad captained by Mitch Marsh.  After successful stints at the Australian Institute of Sport program in Brisbane, he has played important roles for WA in the Futures League side, captaining that team on one occasion at the Adelaide Oval.

His talent, hard work and commitment has been rewarded this year with a Rookie Contract at the Warriors where he is alongside fellow keeper/batsman Cam Bancroft from the Willetton Dragons.

Current joint Club Champion with Craig Simmons, Sam had a busy year last season with Futures League games mid-week and club games on the weekends.  He made four half-centuries for the Futures League side, and ended the District season with a First Grade average of 38.75 and pocketed 33 dismissals.  With an ambition to knock off club legend Joe Sarsero as games record holder, you can be sure that all things being equal, Sam will be a vital cog in what promises to be the most successful era of our club over the next ten years.
